The Isola Capo Rizzuto irrigation scheme, in Catanzaro and Crotone districts, encompasses an irrigated land area of 10.000 Ha (Photo 1) under the jurisdiction of Consorzio di Bonifica Alli Punta delle Castella dei raggruppati di Catanzaro e Crotone. Subdivided in 6 irrigational lots, all of which are currently operative, it is fed by lake Ampollino's water which, passing through Sila hydroelectric plants, flows into Tacina river (4 m3/s).
Originating from Tacina weir (310 m a.s.l.), a long siphon reaches Cutro surge tower (215 m a.s.l.) which disconnects the upstream siphon from the downstream canal itself (DN 1600-800 mm). It is this 20 km long channel that serves the irrigation lots of the CU sector and, through St. Anna Tower (Photo 2; h= 35 m), the homonymous seasonal crown reservoir as well (17 m3; 174 m a.s.l.), which serves, through SA spilling basin (156 m a.s.l.), the low-lying area SA. The canal then divides and the two branches reach two surge towers CU8 (202 m a.s.l.; h=30 m) and CU10 (Photo 5; 199 m a.s.l.; h=50 m) bound to support the piezometrics of the uphill irrigational lots and to feed the compensation basins below, serving the last two districts.
Studio de Vito-CESECO INTERNATIONAL srl delivered both the irrigation scheme for the area spreading below Cutro surge tower and the detailed design of the whole area. In 2001 the hydraulic regulatory surveys were prepared together with the detailed design inclusive of maintenance and remote control issues.
