The project, a reach of which was granted to CESECO, was based upon a previous preliminary design provided in 1965 by Prof. Filippo Arredi, who had envisaged the construction of two conduction canals originating from Montedoglio basin, situated on Tiber river at an altitude of 393 m a.s.l., respectively reaching Todi, through Tiber valley, and Spoleto, through Umbria valley.
CESECO was awarded the preliminary and detailed designs of a section of the western branch, from Chiesaccia to Arezzo, for a total length of 28,000 m and a discharge of 14 m3/s. Arredi's design had to be updated and modified according to changed environmental and urban planning issues. More specifically, in Arezzo plain free surface canals were substituted with tunnels and siphons.
